A prisoner serving a life sentence for a violent crime has been transferred to the California State Prison in Vacaville after he was accidentally released from custody in Sacramento County.
Officials with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department are still trying to figure out how 28-year-old Shaquile Lash was released from jail despite being sentenced to life imprisonment over a violent carjacking and robbery that were enhanced due to his gang affiliations.
Lash was transferred from a state-run, super-maximum security prison east of Bakersfield to the Sacramento County Main Jail on Wednesday. He was due to be arraigned on fraud charges with several other individuals, but a prison guard accidentally released him into the community.
Officials with the sheriff’s department say they aren’t sure if his accidental release was due to a computer glitch or human error. He was released from custody late Wednesday evening and re-apprehended Thursday afternoon in San Joaquin County.
Lash is now incarcerated at the California State Prison in Vacaville while he awaits arraignment on the fraud charges. He is eligible for parole in 2035.
