A suspected home intruder was fatally shot by a resident in Cordelia this morning, according to a Fairfield city official.
The incident happened around 8:30 a.m. along the 600 block of Vintage Valley Drive in rural Fairfield.
A man knocked on the door of a residence, then allegedly kicked in the door and gained entry to the home when no one answered.
The residents of the home were inside at the time and witnessed the man enter their house through their home surveillance camera, according to Fairfield City Councilmember Catherine Moy.
Moy said the homeowner was armed with a legally-owned handgun and fired two shots at the suspect.
The suspect left the home and later collapsed on a nearby street, Moy said.
“Police responded and located the shot suspect,” Moy posted to Facebook. “Officers began CPR immediately, and fire personnel took over life-saving efforts once they arrived on the scene, but the suspect had been shot in the chest area and did not survive.”
Moy said a firearm was recovered next to the suspect. It was not clear if the firearm belonged to the alleged home intruder.
The suspect has not been identified as of Tuesday afternoon.
