A student artist from Armijo High School has earned a top honor in Congressman John Garamendi’s art competition for a second year in a row.
Fayola Fasuyi's contribution, "Gaze of a Black Experience," earned the top honor for Solano County in the annual art competition. Her work will receive Congressional recognition by Garamendi, a spokesperson for his office told Solano NewsNet on Wednesday.
Last year, Fasuyi won the competition outright with “Heroes Like Me.” The work was displayed in the Capitol throughout the year.
Garamendi said a panel of independent judges had a difficult task narrowing down the contributions from throughout his district, and that students were supported by their teachers, parents and other mentors who offered encouragement and words of advice throughout the process.
The art competition is held each spring in various Congressional districts across the country. Members of the U.S. House of Representatives sponsor the competition. The competition is open to high school students within a representative’s district.
Participants are allowed to include a wide variety of artwork, including paintings, drawings, two-dimensional collages, prints, mixed art mediums, computer-generated art and photography.
Garamendi represents California’s 3rd Congressional District, which includes portions of Solano County.
