The first recall of 2021 issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) involves a Fairfield company that manufactures ready-to-eat, fully-cooked Polish sausage.
Officials with the USDA said on Saturday that the sausage was manufactured by Courage Production, LLC under the Teton Waters Ranch brand name.
The recalled product involves 1,645 pounds of Polish sausage manufactured on October 9, 2020 that may contain a known allergen, the USDA said. The recall was given the Class I designation, the highest of the three recall classifications used by the USDA, which signals a “reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”
The affected product contains all of the following:
Four Polish sausages in a 10-ounce, vacuum-sealed bag
Lot code 202831 (which may be displayed as 20283 1)
Establishment number 6024 (which may be displayed as EST: 6024)
A “Use or Freeze By” date of January 8, 2021
The Polish sausage likely contains mozzarella cheese made from milk, which is considered an allergen. The product doesn’t contain a required label that warns of the presence of milk, the USDA said.
The recall was issued after a customer complained to the USDA that their Polish sausage contained both red bell peppers and milk, neither of which were present on the product’s label.
The affected product was shipped to grocery stores throughout California as well as stores in Colorado, Indiana, Maryland, Maine, New York and Oregon.
“Consumers who have purchased this product are urged not to consume them,” the USDA said in a statement obtained by Solano News Update. “These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”
Those with questions about this specific recall are asked to contact Shane Osterhaler, the food safety officer at Courage Production, at 707-422-6300.
Those with general food safety questions related to meat or poultry products are encouraged to call a special USDA hotline at 1-888-674-6854.
