Health officials in Solano County confirmed the first confirmed case of COVID-19 and influenza infection last week
Officials declined to offer specifics about who the person is or where they were infected, citing health privacy laws that preclude them from releasing those details.
But officials did confirm that that the infected person is between the ages of 20 and 65, lives in Solano County and works in the health care sector.
A county health officer said being infected with both COVID-19 and the flu “basically means someone has a higher risk of developing complicated symptoms.”
The co-infection comes as health officials throughout the United States have been urging individuals to get a flu shot, particularly as the rate of coronavirus starts to increase into a so-called “third wave.”
The case is the first-confirmed instance of a simultaneous COVID-19 and flu infection in the United States. Solano County was also the first place in the country to have a confirmed case of COVID-19 earlier this year.
Officials continue to urge individuals to get flu shots as soon as possible, especially those in high-risk categories including the elderly and those who may have complex health conditions.
