A wind-whipped fire forced the closure of Highway 12 near Suisun City on Monday.
Around 2 p.m., fire crews were dispatched to the area of Petersen Road near Walters Road west of Travis Air Force Base. When firefighters arrived, they found a five-acre brush fire that was spreading quickly due to wind gusts in excess of 30 miles per hour.
A three-alarm response was called for the fire, which grew to over 300 acres before crews managed to contain it. Highway 12 was briefly closed for a period of time while firefighters battled the blaze.
An ominous smoke plume could be seen from as far away as Vacaville, according to eyewitnesses on social media.
No structures were threatened by the fire, officials said. The cause of the blaze was determined to be a tossed cigarette.
The fire broke out during Red Flag weather conditions in which forecasters said any wildfires that start could ignite quickly and spread rapidly. In Solano County, a Red Flag Warning issued by the National Weather Service lasts through Tuesday afternoon.
