Fairfield, Suisun cops tackle speeders on local roads

Police in Fairfield and Suisun City this week carried out a speed enforcement operation that caught dozens of drivers who were in a hurry.
The enforcement operations came amid citizen complaints of speeding vehicles in specific parts of both cities.
On Wednesday, Fairfield patrol officers targeted speeders on Airbase Parkway. One person was cited for going over 110 miles per hour on the road that connects Interstate 80 to neighboring Travis Air Force Base. That driver’s vehicle was impounded for 30 days, police said.
All told, 56 drivers in Fairfield were cited for speeding on area roadways. In Suisun City, a similar operation netted 12 citations for speeding, stop sign violations and other issues.
“It’s clear that there have been some immediate changes in driver behavior with more drivers speeding, some at excessively dangerous speeds,” Barbara Rooney, a spokesperson for the California Office of Traffic Safety, said in a statement, adding that the agency found the trend “alarming.”
“We should be focused on protecting lives, and the simple action of following speed limits help keep ourselves and other safe,” Rooney said.
The problem is pervasive throughout California, with Highway Patrol officers reporting a 93 percent increase in known speeding violations within a two-month period starting September 1. More than 4,800 citations were issued during that period, according to information collected by state officials and relayed by the Fairfield Police Department on social media.
In addition to a heavy fine, drivers could face additional violations — including a revocation of their license and an impounding of their vehicle — for traveling above certain speeds in excess of posted speed limits.
Some Solano County law enforcement agencies recently received state funding to conduct traffic safety operations, including speed enforcement.
