The Fairfield Police Department says it will operate a sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint on Saturday.
The checkpoint will be in the area of Fifth Street and West Texas Street, the police department said in a community bulletin.
The police department did not say when the checkpoint would be operated on Saturday. The agency said high-visibility enforcement like checkpoints help reduce the number of people who are injured or killed by alcohol- or drug-related crashes.
There could be a small impact on traffic through the area while the checkpoint is being conducted, an agency spokesperson said. Officers will ask drivers for their licenses and look for signs of alcohol or drug impairment. Those arrested for DUI face fines and jail time, the agency said.
Police departments are required to provide prior notice to the public before checkpoints are operated. In at least one DUI case, the California Court of Appeals reversed a woman’s DUI conviction after finding the arresting police department did not provide advance notice of a sobriety checkpoint. Appellate judges found that the lack of notice violated the woman’s constitutional rights.
