The Fairfield Police Department is operating a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint this evening.
The DUI checkpoint is located near the Bank of America along the 2500 block of North Texas Street.
Fairfield police announced the DUI and driver’s license checkpoint in a social media post on Thursday. Like other checkpoints, this one is being conducted in an area that is prone to traffic collisions, DUI arrests and other incidents.
“The deterrent effect of high-visibility enforcement using both DUI checkpoints and DUI saturation points has proven to lower the number of [people] killed and injured in alcohol or drug-impaired crashes,” the agency said in a press release.
The press release cited statistics that claim DUI checkpoints can reduce impairment-related crashes by up to 20 percent. Solano NewsNet noticed the exact same paragraph in Fairfield’s press release appears in similar DUI checkpoint press releases issued by other California law enforcement agencies over the last two years.
Fairfield officers will be looking for signs of impairment from drivers who are suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, including marijuana and prescription drugs. Those who are shown to have impairment face a revocation of their license, jail time and possible fines up to and over $10,000.
