A Fairfield police dog that was stabbed during a standoff last month is back on the job.
The police dog, named Cort, was injured in April as officers were attempting to apprehend a burglary suspect at a home in the city.
The dog was taken to a veterinary hospital in Davis for treatment of a bite wound and a stab injury, Solano NewsNet reported.
On Wednesday, a Fairfield Police Department spokesperson confirmed Cort returned to full duty this week. The confirmation came after City Council Member Catherine Moy said Cort was back on the job during Tuesday’s council meeting.
“He’s a real hero,” Moy said. “He’s doing well, he’s back on the job, [and] he’s not a quitter.”
Moy said Cort inspired her to work with a retired police staff manager to form a new not-for-profit called “Friends of the Fairfield Police K-9 Association.” The group is focused on advocating for police K-9s in the city; Moy said one of their first initiatives is focused on erecting a memorial to the police dogs somewhere on the city grounds.
Correction: An earlier version of this story identified one of the co-founders of “Friends of the Fairfield Police K-9” as a retired Vacaville police officer. After the article was published, the co-founder, Lisa Murphy, clarified that she retired as a police staff manager and was not a police officer.
