Five people were arrested earlier this month during two DUI and driver’s license checkpoint operations conducted by the Fairfield Police Department, the agency said on Wednesday.
Some of the individuals arrested were detained on suspicion of driving drunk, while others were detained for driving while under the influence of marijuana. The police department did not give a specific breakdown of which arrests were related to each crime.
The checkpoint was operated through a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety, which secured federal funding from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The money is earmarked for traffic-related initiatives that promote driver safety and law enforcement.
The police department publicized the location of the checkpoints before they were conducted, a move the agency said was proven to deter DUI-related incidents in the past.
Around 1,500 drivers went through the checkpoints in the two days they were operated by Fairfield Police. Of those, 1 percent of drivers faced traffic-related infringements, according to an analysis by Solano NewsNet.
In addition to the five arrests, 10 drivers were cited for driving a vehicle while on a suspended license. Their cars were impounded as a result of the citations, the police department said.
