A Fairfield-based food truck has apologized after a photo posted online Thursday showed its employees trolling fans of the Sacramento Kings basketball game while serving sports fans at a ballpark in West Sacramento.
Baby O’s Donuts was serving its mini pastries inside Sutter Health Park on Thursday during a Minor League Baseball match-up between the Sacramento River Cats and the Round Rock (Texas) Express.
During the game, a River Cats fan posted a photo to social media that showed an employee of Baby O’s posting a sign that read “Go Warriors,” a nod to the Golden State Warriors professional basketball team, which is battling the Sacramento Kings in the first round of the NBA Playoffs.
The Kings made the playoffs for the first time since 2006, breaking the longest post-season drought in professional sports (to include football, baseball and hockey). Golden 1 Center, the Kings home arena, is just a few miles away from Sutter Health Park, where the River Cats were playing on Thursday.
A spokesperson for Baby O’s Donuts told Solano NewsNet the sign was posted by a teenage employee who thought it was “funny” to provoke fans of the Sacramento Kings. The sign was eventually taken down after people started tagging the business in angry social media posts.
“We do apologize for that, [and] he was made sure to not repeat that,” the spokesperson said. “We are currently having a meeting about it with our team.”
It wasn’t clear if the River Cats were aware of the incident. The River Cats are owned by businessman Vivek Ranadivé, who also shares ownership of the Kings.
The playoff battle between the two Northern California teams began last Sunday, with the Kings barely clinching a win against the Warriors at home. The final score was 123-126.
In Game 2, Warriors power forward Draymond Green was ejected after stepping on Kings center Domantas Sabonis in the fourth quarter. The NBA later issued a one-game suspension without pay. The Kings won the game, marking the first time the Warriors had lost two opening playoff games since its wunderkind Stephen Curry joined the team. The final score was 106-114.
The incident involving Green and Sabonis set the stage for a bitter rivalry between fans that was on full display for Game 3 in San Francisco on Thursday. The Warriors dominated the Kings with better offensive and defensive playing throughout the entire game, and Golden State clinched their first win of the first round with a score of 97-114.
The River Cats fared no better against the Express on Thursday, losing with a final score of 1-2.
