Forecasters with the National Weather Service in Sacramento have issued an Excessive Heat Watch that covers much of the Sacramento Valley, including all of Solano County.
The watch period begins Friday, June 10 at 11 a.m. and will expire later that evening.
“Extreme heat will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities,” forecasters wrote in a weather bulletin reviewed by Solano NewsNet on Monday.
The Excessive Heat Watch comes as forecasters predict triple-digit temperatures in northern parts of Solano County and Rio Vista, as well as high temperatures in the upper-90s for Benicia and Vallejo.
Moderate heat risks will start Thursday afternoon and last through Sunday, but the triple-digit weather predicted for Friday triggered the watch advisory.
During periods of hot weather, forecasters say children and pets should not be left in vehicles because the interior can quickly reach lethal temperatures, even with the windows “cracked.”
Individuals should seek shelter inside or in the shade during the hottest periods of the day. Those who must be outdoors should stay hydrated by drinking water and should wear sunscreen to avoid ultraviolet exposure.
Solano County is expected to open several cooling centers throughout the region, with local library branches designated as official cooling centers during periods of hot weather.
