A crash between a vehicle and an Amtrak train claimed the lives of three people on Sunday, including two residents from Dixon.
The crash happened around 1 p.m. along the 3000 block of Orwood Road in an unincorporated part of Contra Costa County near Brentwood.
A train that departed Stockton en route to Martinez struck a sedan that was on the tracks, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Three people were killed in the crash, and another three people were injured, the Bay Area News Group reported. The Contra Costa Coroner’s Office identified two of the three deceased victims as Dixon residents Julia Mondragon, 41, and 72-year-old Maria Nieves. The third victim was identified as Mercedes Regalado, 51, of Antioch.
Three others, including two children, were hospitalized with various injuries ranging from moderate to severe. Their identities were not known as of Monday afternoon.
It was not clear from reports if the vehicle became stuck on the tracks, or if the driver of the vehicle simply did not see the oncoming train. The crash happened in an area that residents long complained was too dangerous for vehicular traffic, since the crossing had no signal or crossing arms.
The track is owned by BNSF Railway, a freight railroad company based in Fort Worth, Texas. A spokesperson for BNSF Railway has not yet returned an e-mail seeking additional information about the ongoing investigation into the crash.
