A football game between Dixon High School and Winters High School was abruptly canceled last week after a coach tested positive for the novel coronavirus, Solano NewsNet has learned.
In a letter sent to parents last week, Dixon High School Assistant Principal Robert Bugalski said the school was notified on March 18 that the unnamed coach tested positive for COVID-19.
As a result of the positive test, all Dixon High football players and coaching staff took COVID-19 precautions under guidance issued by the Dixon Unified School District.
It was not clear if the game would be rescheduled before the end of the season.
High school sporting events were put on hold last March as state health officials grappled with the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Outdoor high school sporting events were allowed to resume last month following updated guidance from the California Department of Public Health.
“With case rates and hospitalizations declining across California, we are allowing outdoor competition to resume, with modifications and steps to reduce risk, in counties where case rates are lower,” Dr. Tomas Aragon, California’s public health officer, said in a statement.
Solano County has seen an easing of COVID-19 infections since state and county health officials began rolling out several variants of a vaccine to thwart severe symptoms associated with the virus.
The vaccine does not provide complete immunity from the virus, which means people can still get infected with COVID-19 even after receiving both vaccine doses, health experts say.
Educators in high-infection and rural areas became eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine late last month. School officials in Dixon did not say whether the coach who became infected with COVID-19 received a vaccine prior to becoming sick.
