The Solano County Sheriff’s Office says an alert community member helped deputies discover a cache of weapons in a discarded safe last week.
The weapons were found in a remote part of rural north Solano County, a sheriff’s spokesperson said in a statement on Friday.
Inside the dumped safe were several inert grenades, multiple handguns, a grenade launcher and a machine gun with a tripod, the spokesperson affirmed.
“The items were all taken as evidence, and detectives are attempting to learn who the save may have belonged to,” the spokesperson said.
Tracking the weapons and the safe back to the original owner might prove difficult: Serial numbers associated with the items were etched off before the safe was dumped in the county, the sheriff’s department said.
It was the second time in two years a discarded gun safe was located in a remote part of the county.
