At least two coyotes were spotted roaming through several Fairfield neighborhoods late Sunday evening.
Around 9 p.m., police received a call of a coyote sighting in a residential neighborhood near the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Tabor Avenue.
A few minutes later, eyewitness Nicholas Wilson posted to Facebook that he chased two coyotes out of the backyard of a home near Bristol Way.
Coyote sightings in Fairfield are unusual, but they’re not unheard of: In 2014, the local newspaper reported concerns from residents that the animals were preying on small pets that were left outside in the overnight hours.
Experts say coyotes typically avoid interactions with humans, focusing instead on small prey and unattended, unsecured garbage bins.
Residents who live in coyote-prone areas are urged to take the following steps:
Bring dogs, cats and other pets indoors when possible, and avoid feeding them outside.
Don’t leave food or water bowls for pets outdoors — these can attract coyotes and other animals.
Make sure garbage, compost and recycling bins are stored in a secure area with lids that are fully closed.
Residents whose home landscapes have fruit- or nut-bearing trees and other plants should regularly clean up fallen fruit, nuts and other items when they fall to the ground.
Seal off crawl spaces and other possible hiding areas for small animals like coyotes whenever possible.
If you encounter a coyote, wave your arms and shout loudly — this typically scares them off.
Coyote sightings can be reported to local law enforcement or by calling the Solano County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control hotline at 707-784-4733.
