County health officials say they will follow the state’s public health guidance when deciding whether to re-implement an indoor mask mandate for public spaces, according to a report.
The affirmation came in a San Francisco Chronicle report published on Friday after reporter Annie Vainshtein reached out to every county health official in the Bay Area to see if they would follow Alameda County’s lead in reverting to an indoor mask mandate after an increase in coronavirus (COVID-19) infections over the last several weeks.
Earlier in the week, Solano NewsNet reported the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had recommended residents and workers in Solano County mask up when visiting indoor public spaces due to the high transmission rate of COVID-19.
In the past, county health officials have been hesitant to implement a public mask mandate in Solano County, choosing instead to focus on public education of and encouragement for COVID-19 vaccines and boosters.
Health experts say the wide availability of COVID-19 vaccines and booster shots are helping to keep death rates low. No vaccine or booster can prevent a COVID-19 infection, but they have been proven to lessen symptoms associated with the virus, which can help prevent medical complications and hospitalizations.
