CDC recommends indoor masking for Solano County

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recommending several Northern California communities return to indoor masking practices based on higher transmissions and infections of the novel coronavirus COVID-19.
This week, the CDC said those who live and work in Solano County are encouraged to wear a mask when they are in an indoor public space because of higher community transmissions of COVID-19.
The recommendation is not a mandate, and county health officials have not indicated whether they will move to implement a mandatory indoor masking requirement. In the past, county health officials have chosen to encourage individuals who are at a high risk of contracting COVID-19 to get a vaccine or booster shot instead of implementing a mask mandate.
Data published by the Solano County Public Health Office shows an increase in COVID-19 infections throughout the region since the start of May.
On May 27, Solano County reported more than 188 daily cases of positive COVID-19 tests, up from 76 about one month prior. Hospitalization rates are considered relatively low compared to pandemic levels, with 32 patients being admitted to a hospital with COVID-19 at the moment, compared to 12 in April.
While infection and hospitalization rates are up in Solano County, deaths attributable to COVID-19 have not increased since February, according to information published online by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). There has not been a COVID-19 death in Solano County since March, the state data showed.
Health experts say the wide availability of COVID-19 vaccines and booster shots are helping to keep death rates low. No vaccine or booster can prevent a COVID-19 infection, but they have been proven to lessen symptoms associated with the virus, which can help prevent medical complications and hospitalizations.
For this reason, health experts continue to encourage individuals to get the COVID-19 vaccine and booster shots when they are eligible to do so. Last month, Solano County health officials said children between the ages of 5 and 11 are now eligible to receive COVID-19 booster shots.
