Firefighters from the state’s fire agency will conduct a prescribed burn in rural Yolo County near Winters on Monday and Tuesday.
The burn is scheduled to take place both days between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. along Highway 128 between Pleasants Valley Road to Canyon Creek Resort.
Fire officials with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention (CAL FIRE) said the prescribed burn could start later or end earlier depending on weather conditions and other factors.
Approximately 50 acres of dry vegetation will be burned during the exercise, CAL FIRE said, and smoke from the burn will likely be visible in parts of Solano, Yolo and Napa counties during and after the event.
“The Highway 128 Prescribed Burn project is designed to create an annual fuel break to prevent fires originating on Highway 128 from spreading into steep, rugged country to the north where [the] topography makes firefighting extremely difficult,” a CAL FIRE official said in a news release.
When the burn is complete, a fire line will stretch for around six miles, officials said.
