For nearly two weeks, officials at Cache Creek Casino and Resort have been responding to a massive cyber attack that crippled online infrastructure and forced the closure of the always-open gambling institution.
The casino has been closed since September 20 after a ransomware attack knocked systems offline, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
Casino officials have been tight-lipped about the cause of the unusual closure — Cache Creek is typically open 24 hours a day, every day — and it only disclosed the computer attack in a notice sent to members of its Cache Club on Wednesday, more than a week after the casino was forced to shut down operations.
Federal authorities have been working with casino employees and executives to determine how the systems were attacked and the scope of the intrusion, one source said. They believe the attack originated externally and was “not an inside job,” the source said.
In an email sent on Wednesday, Cache Creek said it had no indication that customer data was compromised as part of the computer attack, but it admitted the extent of the intrusion is still unknown.
The casino said game floor employees and resort workers are continuing to receive their regular pay and benefits, even if they have not been asked to come into work.
“While we do not yet have a reopening date, we are making good progress and expect to announce a reopening date soon,” the casino said.
