Firefighters in Fairfield were dispatched to at least four fires in the city between Tuesday evening and early Wednesday morning, and at least one of those fires is being probed as a possible case of arson.
The first fire happened around 11 p.m. when firefighters were dispatched to a dumpster on fire along the 800 block of Madison Street. Less than an hour later, a second fire was reported along the 1500 block of Empire Street, this time involving a tree.
In both instances, the fires were quickly knocked down.
Just after midnight, a third fire was reported in dense vegetation along the 1900 block of North Texas Street. A responding fire crew said the origin of that blaze appeared to be a mattress that was on the ground, and they suspected it may have been started by a homeless individual in the area.
Less than a half-hour later, firefighters and police were dispatched to a home along the 2000 block of Falcon Drive after a resident reported her lawn on fire. Responding firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, with damage limited to the lawn and a perimeter fence.
It was not clear if any of the fires were connected, but police opened an investigation into the origin of the Falcon Drive blaze after deeming it suspicious.
Officers canvassed the area for a potential arson suspect, and they zeroed in on a person walking in front of an apartment building along Matthew Street just after 1 a.m. The person was detained after he was found in possession of a gas canister; it was not clear if the person was linked to any of the fires.
