Firefighters in Cordelia battled a one-alarm grass fire that quickly spread from the shoulder of Interstate 80 on Tuesday.
The fire broke out around 5:30 p.m. along the west-bound lanes of the freeway just east of American Canyon Road near Cordelia.
Preliminary reports from the California Highway Patrol indicated the driver of a Toyota Camry pulled off to the side of the road after smoke was visible from the hood of the car.
A short time later, the car burst into flames, and by the time the first fire crew arrived to the scene, it was fully engulfed.
The fire ultimately ignited nearby grass on the shoulder of the road, where it spread quickly through dry fuel, according to a responding Cordelia fire crew.
Firefighters from CAL Fire, Fairfield and Suisun City were dispatched to provide mutual aid.
Forward progress on the fire was stopped just before 6:30 p.m.
