The Benicia Police Department will hold a virtual meet-and-greet to introduce the community to the city’s newest police chief, the agency said on Friday.
Mike Greene was promoted to the position of police chief in February, taking over the role from former police chief Erik Upson, who became Benicia’s city manager earlier this year.
In addition to the meet-and-greet, the police department says it is hoping to get feedback on the launch of a new license plate reader program within the city.
License plate readers have been used in other communities to help catch car thieves, kidnapping suspects and other criminal suspects, but their use have drawn privacy concerns over how police departments collect and retain data.
During the virtual town hall, the police department and representatives of a company providing the license plate reader technology will offer presentations and answer questions from members of the community about the system and how it is expected to be used by the agency.
The meet-and-greet and virtual presentation will be conducted via Zoom, and members of the public need to register before the meeting takes place. To register, click or tap this link.
Those with questions are asked to contact Kelly Botello, the executive assistant to the police chief, by e-mailing kbotello@ci.benicia.ca.us.
