The Benicia Police Department praised a local resident who helped officers detain a Fairfield carjacking suspect earlier this month.
The resident, who was only identified as “Mr. Donohue” in a public statement, was one of several eyewitnesses to report a female driver who was acting erratic earlier this month.
“What made this Benicia resident’s act even more remarkable is that he was able to distract the suspect and de-escalated the situation to keep her at the scene before officers arrived,” a spokesperson wrote in a social media post.
Police say they don’t want members of the public to put themselves in harms way, but Donahue’s act showed an commendable amount of bravery. To honor him, Benicia’s interim police chief Michael Greene presented him with a Chief’s Coin earlier this week.
“His bravery and quick thinking helped our officers tremendously,” the spokesperson said.
Benicia police say residents and others who see crimes in progress are asked to call 9-1-1 or their local dispatch number at 707-745-3411.
