A Benicia patrol officer thwarted a burglary in progress during a routine shift on Friday, the police department said in a social media post on Saturday.
Around 11 p.m., the officer was patrolling in the area of Industrial Park when he spotted a suspicious vehicle that was driving without their lights on.
When the officer attempted to pull the SUV over, it took off and a brief pursuit was initiated. The pursuit wound up on Interstate 680 where the chase was called off due to public safety concerns, the agency said.
After doubling back to the scene, police officers located around $10,000 in power tools stashed near a business and a container that appeared to have been pried open.
“The case is on active investigation, but we are glad that more loss to the business was prevented,” a Benicia police spokesperson said.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Benicia Police Department.
