Benicia police officers helped recover several stolen items while the rest of the city watched the Super Bowl on Sunday.
An alert citizen pointed out what appeared to be an abandoned all-terrain vehicle in a field along Lake Herman Road. The vehicle was loaded with tires, generators and “random hardware,” a spokesperson said in a social media post.
A short investigation led officers to conclude that the vehicle was started using a broken key. At some point during its short journey, the vehicle had run out of gas and was abandoned by its driver in the field.
Officers later noticed a nearby business had a wide open gate, with a cut chain located on the ground not too far from it. Police made contact with the business owner who confirmed the goods in the back of the vehicle were stolen.
Police say they are still working to identify the suspects in the case. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Benicia Police Department at 707-745-3411.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs to win Super Bowl LV with a score of 31-9.
