The Benicia Police Department on Tuesday detained several teenagers who were accused of firing an illegal weapon in the city’s industrial area.
A dispatcher reviewing city cameras noticed a suspicious vehicle that was parked along Lake Herman Road near Industrial Road late Tuesday afternoon. After several minutes, the dispatcher noticed a person exiting the car and firing a handgun into some brush located off the roadway, police said.
When officers arrived to the scene, they detained three teenagers in connection with the incident. A search of the vehicle turned up a loaded pistol that did not have a serial number, something law enforcement refers to as a “ghost” gun.
Police say one of the teenagers admitted to possession of the ghost gun and was booked into Solano County Juvenile Hall on related charges. A second teenager admitted to firing the gun, police said; that person was cited and released to their parents.
“It was unclear what they were shooting at, but we are glad that no one was hurt in this incident,” a law enforcement official said in a statement. “This is also a great example on how technology, when used appropriately, can be a great tool to maintain a safe community.”
Police did not release the identified of the teenagers involved because of their ages.
