An alert officer with the Benicia Police Department captured a suspected catalytic converter thief during a traffic stop on Wednesday.
The stop occurred around 1 a.m. along Columbus Parkway. The circumstances of the stop were not immediately clear, but police said they made contact with a drive who was later found to have an arrest warrant out of Sacramento County.
The driver was identified as 35-year-old Miguel Lopez-Reynoso. He was detained at the scene pursuant to the out-of-county warrant.
Police later learned that Lopez-Reynoso matched the description of a suspect who was connected to an alleged theft of catalytic converters in Pinole. A subsequent search of the pick-up truck driven by Lopez-Reynoso turned up a “cut catalytic converter,” drug paraphernalia, stolen mail and other items, police said.
Lopez-Reynoso was booked into the Solano County jail on three misdemeanor theft charges as well as several other charges related to incidents in Vallejo and Sacramento County.
