Officials in Benicia say progress is being made at a water treatment plant where an underground pipe sprung a leak over the weekend.
A utility crew was able to locate the ruptured 24-inch pipe last night, and workers began repairing the pipe on Tuesday, city officials said in an update.
The work is tedious in part because of the location of the leak and its proximity to other pipes and tubes, including some that carry electricity.
“The next step is to test the entire system for additional leaks,” a city official said on Tuesday. “If no other leaks are found, the crew will begin the process to remove all temporary equipment and continue to test water quality to ensure Benicia’s drinking water system is protected.”
The city’s current water supply remains safe to use, though city officials have ordered a 30 percent reduction in water usage for residents and businesses there until things are back to normal.
“We will lift the conservation mandate as soon as possible,” the city affirmed on Tuesday.
Officials say they will provide an additional update to the public on Wednesday.
