Activists in Benicia will hold a rally to coincide with a national gun violence prevention movement on Saturday.
The Benicia chapter of the March For Our Lives movement will start their rally at the First Street Green located near the intersection of First Street and B Street on Saturday, June 11 at 10 a.m.
The event will include a march up and down First Street, followed by a rally at the First Street Green.
The rally is one of 400 being organized throughout the United States on Saturday. The events come amid a wave of recent gun-related violence, including mass shootings at a supermarket in Buffalo and at an elementary school in Texas, which have renewed calls from activists for tougher gun control laws.
“Our message and ask for this March is simple: no longer will we be held hostage by our lawmakers and no longer will we tolerate feeling unsafe in our communities,” a spokesperson for the Benicia March For Our Lives movement wrote in an online statement, adding that the event intends to be non-partisan in nature.
“Regardless of what party you stand for, if you do not support lifesaving measures like universal background checks, we will pledge to vote against you this fall and in future elections,” the spokesperson said.
