Two assault rifles were turned in during a gun buyback program in Fairfield on Saturday.
The rifles, described as AR-15s, were among a cache of 92 firearms that the Fairfield Police Department and other community organizations purchased back from the public during the event, a police spokesperson told Solano NewsNet on Monday.
The event was organized in cooperation with the Matt Garcia Foundation, named for the young Fairfield council member who was fatally shot in 2008.
Members of the public who surrendered a handgun were given a $50 prepaid Visa card, or a $100 prepaid Visa card if their gun was a rifle. One or two people surrendered their firearms without accepting a prepaid card, a police spokesperson said on Monday.
The spokesperson said the guns will be reviewed to see if any were reported stolen. If a stolen firearm is identified, the police department will follow up with the registered owner. Firearms that are not identified as stolen will be destroyed.
No questions were asked to those who surrendered their firearm as part of the event.
