A group that is seeking to develop a new city in rural Solano County says a four-alarm grass fire crossed onto some agricultural land that is owned by their parent company.
In a statement, a spokesperson for California Forever confirmed the fire impacted some land owned by their parent company, Flannery Associates, which is being leased to a local rancher through a long-term agreement.
“We have spoken to the fire crews on the site and county officials, and we have offered to assist as needed,” the spokesperson said in an email to Solano NewsNet on Tuesday. “We are extremely grateful to the first responders of Solano County for their tireless work.”
The fire started around noon near the intersection of Denverton Road and Creed Road, with the blaze spreading quickly toward Highway 12. The fire burned 60 acres as of 2 p.m., but could be as large as 400 acres based on perimeter mapping from a U.S. Army aircraft that was near the scene.
The blaze drew a sizable response from the Montezuma Fire Protection District, the Suisun Fire Protection District and local crews from Vacaville, Dixon, Fairfield, Suisun City and Benicia. At one point, a fire official on scene requested aircraft assistance from nearby agencies, but that request went unfulfilled.
A SIG ALERT was issued for Highway 12 near the scene of the fire, with local law enforcement closing the road between Scally Lane and the Highway 12-Highway 113 roundabout. By 2:30 p.m., the east-bound lanes of Highway 12 had re-opened to traffic, with west-bound lanes still shut down due to the presence of emergency vehicles.
The cause of the fire was not determined as of Tuesday afternoon.
