A former Solano County Librarian whose viral TikTok videos helped spread life-affirming messages and promote reading and literacy will be honored during a televised special on Wednesday.
Mychal Threets is one of 10 leaders who will be recognized for making an impact on their community during the second-annual “The Grio Heroes” special, which will air Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. local time, according to Solano NewsNet’s sister publication The Desk. The Grio is not available on broadcast or cable TV in Solano County, but the channel can be streamed for free through the Local Now app for TVs, phones and tablets.
Threets worked for the Solano County Library for more than a decade. During his time with the library, he brought his love of books to TikTok, where his videos amassed more than 17 million likes to date. He left the Solano County Library earlier this year in order to focus on his health; in February, he was named the resident librarian for PBS, where he makes social media videos featuring iconic PBS characters.
“For a quiet library voice person, I have a very loud voice on the internet,” Threets told Time Magazine in May.
For those who miss Wednesday’s telecast, “The Grio Heroes” will replay on Sunday, June 23 and Sunday, June 30. The program will also be available on-demand for free through The Grio’s website, starting Monday, June 24.
