"Disruptive" protest forces closure of Vallejo City Hall
The City of Vallejo has temporarily closed City Hall and suspended certain operations while a "disruptive" protest takes place on the second floor of the building.
In a statement sent to Solano NewsNet on Wednesday, officials at the City of Vallejo said they were closing City Hall for the remainder of the day, and would re-open on an appointment-only basis on Thursday.
"City Hall is currently experiencing a protest that has moved from outside the building into the 2nd-floor public business area," a spokesperson for the City of Vallejo said in a statement. "The extremely loud environment has hindered staff and visitors' ability to conduct regular business. Additionally, due to the number of protestors inside the building, the person capacity of City Hall's public space has been reached."
The protest appears to be related to one organized by a group representing a local charter school that sought to expand its campus into the city's downtown area. Around 50 protestors organized outside City Hall early Wednesday afternoon, then moved their demonstration inside the building near the Vallejo City Council's chambers.
The Vallejo City Council recently granted an appeal filed by opponents of the measure, which triggered Wednesday's protest that consisted mainly of staff members from the charter school.
