A blown transformer triggered a large-scale power outage that affected thousands of Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) customers in Fairfield and Suisun City on Tuesday.
The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. during a Red Flag Warning, when power demand was at its highest due to extreme heat.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing a transformer explode, which sparked a grass fire along the Fairfield-Suisun City line near the railroad tracks.
Rail traffic was shut down while firefighters from both cities and neighboring Vacaville responded to the blaze.
More than 3,400 PG&E customers in Fairfield and Suisun City were in the dark as of 4 p.m. A crew from the utility has been dispatched to the scene, and PG&E reports power should be restored to affected customers by 7 p.m.
